How the DineOutSTL web app handles your information
Effective date: October 11, 2026
DineOutSTL is run by DineOut STL, LLC, a Missouri company based in St. Louis.
We use your location only to sort places by distance, right in your browser. It's never stored or sent anywhere.
zip-centroids.json, a small file of St. Louis-area ZIP center points from the US Census Bureau (2024 ZCTA Gazetteer). The app downloads the whole file, so your ZIP is never part of a request. We use PostHog analytics without cookies to count visits and spins. It doesn't build profiles or track you across sites. PostHog briefly uses your IP address and browser type to make a daily anonymous count and doesn't store your IP.
us.i.posthog.com). It uses PostHog's cookieless mode and keeps PostHog's state in memory only, with no cookies and no PostHog keys in your browser storage. Person profiles, automatic click capture, page-view tracking, session recording, surveys and heatmaps are all off. What we count, in plain terms:
| Event | What it includes |
|---|---|
Visit started (session_start) | A rough referrer category (direct, search, social, campaign or other) and whether the app is open as an installed app. The referring page itself is not sent. |
First visit, active this week or month, 30-day return (first_open, active_week, active_month, d30_return) | Only the week or month of your first visit (and, for the monthly count, whether this is your first month), so we can count returning visitors without an ID. |
Spin (spin) | Area or Near me mode; which reels were locked (region, place, cuisine); the locked cuisine, if any; whether a match was found; whether Hide chains was on. Never your location, ZIP, distance or radius. |
Result shown (result_shown) | The id of the restaurant shown after a spin. Not sent for cards opened from a share link, the Spot of the week or your Recent spins list. |
Button tap (cta_click) | The restaurant id, which button (Website, Call, Directions or Reviews), whether it was the first tap on that card, and, for cards opened from a share link, the Spot of the week or Recent spins, which of these it was. |
Report wrong info tapped (wrong_info_report) | The restaurant id (plus share link, Spot of the week or Recent spins, as above). Nothing you write in the email. |
Listing form opened or submitted (owner_form_open, owner_form_submit) | We count that the form was used and the options you picked, never what you type. On submit that means the reason chosen from the menu and the yes/no answer to "Did DineOutSTL contact you first?". |
Tapping Share, toggling Hide chains, and entering a ZIP send no analytics.
| Key / store | Where | What and why |
|---|---|---|
dineoutstl-counted | localStorage | A few dates (first-visit day, last active week and month, whether the 30-day return was counted), so a return visit isn't counted twice. No ID. Written only if analytics loads. |
dineoutstl-pwa-tip-dismissed | localStorage | "1" after you dismiss the "install app" tip, so it doesn't come back. |
dineoutstl-nearme | sessionStorage (this tab only) | "on" or "off", whether Near me was on, so a reload keeps your mode. Never your location. |
dineoutstl-local | sessionStorage (this tab only) | "on" or "off", whether Hide chains was on. |
dineoutstl-v10a-shell, dineoutstl-v10a-data | Cache Storage (service worker) | Copies of the app files, restaurant catalog, ZIP centroid file and Spot of the week, so the app opens offline. They hold no information about you. |
Your Recent spins list is kept in memory for this tab only and clears when you close or reload it.
The app sets no cookies. You can clear all of this at any time in your browser settings.
Website, Directions, Reviews and Call open the restaurant's site, Google Maps or your phone app. Those services have their own privacy terms. The app sends them only what is in the link: the restaurant's site address, or its name, address or map listing.
The site is served by Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel receives your IP address and browser information with each request so it can deliver the site and keep it secure. These logs are kept briefly under Vercel's policies, and we don't use them to identify visitors.
We don't sell or share your personal information, show ads, or use advertising trackers.
We don't track you across sites, so browser Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control signals don't change anything here. The app behaves the same way either way.
DineOutSTL isn't directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information.
If we change this page, we'll update the effective date above. Big changes will also be noted in the app.
