Lampert Family’s Restaurant in Dogtown Shuttered – Red Shack

ST. LOUIS, MO/June 07, 2017 (STLRestaurant.News) – After just a year in Dogtown, The Red Shack has closed.  According to the restaurant’s Facebook page, the restaurant at 6401 West Park Ave. closed following the death of one of the owners.  Father-daughter restaurateur team Larry and Angie Lampert had opened the taco and burrito joint in May 2016 after running a series of restaurants across the metro area.

Larry Lampert passed away May 8, 2017 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.  On May 25th, a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page announced The Red Shack was closing.  It said simply, “Sadly we lost our leader Larry Lampert on May 8th to cancer.  With him gone we are closing the door to The Red Shack on Friday May 26th.”

The Red Shack was the last in a long line of restaurants owned and operated by Larry Lampert over the years.  The Lampert family of restaurants began in the 1980s when Larry Lampert, a successful auto parts dealer and pitch man (Lampert Auto Centers), opened several Papa Nate’s Pizza shops.  A few years later, he turned from pizzas to sandwiches, opening several Fatman’s Sub shops around the area.  Larry Lampert began offering freshly smoked meats at the sub shops and later converted them to barbecue restaurants, still bearing the Fatman’s moniker.  Lampert’s restaurant efforts became known for unpretentious, high-quality barbecue long before smoking meat became the popular restaurant model it is today.

Eventually, Larry Lampert opened the Plush Pig BBQ in downtown Clayton.  He teamed up with his daughter Angie and moved the barbecue restaurant to Rock Hill in 2009.  It closed a few years later.  By 2012, the Lamperts were operating Mister Lunch, a sandwich shop in Maryland Heights, which later morphed into Lampert’s BBQ.  The father-daughter duo moved into the city of St. Louis and opened the Q Shack, a Tex-Mex and barbecue joint in a trailer in Ellendale.  They later shifted the menu to all Tex-Mex and changed the name to The Red Shack.  But the lot they were renting was sold in 2014, forcing the pair to close up shop.  They opened the new Red Shack at West Park and Tamm Avenues in Dogtown on Memorial Day weekend 2016.

Larry Lampert may be gone, but his entrepreneurial spirit may live on in his daughter Angie.  After the Facebook post announcing The Red Shack’s closure, a commenter asked, “Closing forever, or just that day?”  To which Angie replied, “The Red Shack will close for good.  Doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t try something else.”
